Neighborhood Medical Center celebrates World AIDS Day 2019, by returning to the origin of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS program. In 1984 at the age of 13, a young Ryan White was one of the first children with hemophilia to be diagnosed with AIDS. Ryan White was a hemophiliac since birth and had contracted the virus after receiving a blood transfusion. This happened at a time when there was no education and hardly any information on AIDS. With a prognosis of 3-6 months, Ryan’s mother feared Ryan wouldn’t be healthy enough to attend school. Ryan had a strong desire to return to school and back to his normal life despite being diagnosed with AIDS and given only months to live. He experienced stigma and discrimination from his community, before and during his advocacy for himself and others, who were diagnosed with HIV. Ryan White’s strongest supporter was his mother, Jeanne White-Ginder, who will be our special guest speaker for the evening. as she details his life, his fight, and his triumph.

This event will be held at the University Center Club at Florida State University, West Champions Club, 403 Stadium Drive Building B, Tallahassee, Fl. 32306. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. This World AIDS Day Event, will bring HIV/AIDS Awareness to Leon and the surrounding Counties about who Ryan White was, how his life makes such an impact in the world today, and what the Ryan White funding and Care Act is.
